Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterized by recurring flare-ups that cause the skin to become red. Other inflammatory rashes may occasionally appear alongside rosacea. It most commonly affects the facial area, typically the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin.
Rosacea usually begins after the age of 30 and occurs with equal frequency in men and women.
The exact causes of rosacea remain unclear. The condition appears more often in people with fair skin, and it is believed that those affected have a hereditary predisposition to increased sensitivity to triggering factors.
In addition to the skin rash, rosacea can cause flushing accompanied by sensations of heat, burning, and stinging.
Flare-ups can be triggered by various factors:
– Sun and heat
– Cold and wind
– Alcohol
– Hot and spicy food
– Physical exertion
– Emotional stress
– Hormonal changes
– Fatigue
Rosacea is diagnosed based on its clinical presentation. One of the most important components of treatment is lifestyle modification. Sunscreen should be used to protect against the harmful effects of sun exposure. For more severe forms of rosacea, topical and systemic medications prescribed by a dermatologist may also be used.
