Solariums mostly use UVA lamps, whose longer wavelengths of radiation penetrate deep into the skin, causing DNA damage, oxidative stress and photodamage. The dose of UVA radiation from a solarium in one unit of time is up to 15 times higher than the dose from solar radiation. According to research, people who use sunbeds are 74% more likely to develop melanoma than people who do not. In addition, there is a 1.5-fold increase in the risk of basal cell carcinoma and a 2.5-fold increase in the risk of squamous cell carcinoma.
